The idea of “teach to the middle” is admirable and is one of a good idea in principle but one of unsustainable merit for the higher achiever to evolve and reach their capacity potentials. A law of diminishing returns! The average measure will forever continue to lower if the higher spectrum learners are not allowed to flourish and keep “the middle” at a current or progressing level. Assignments are not challenging enough, or the person is bored and not interested in the teacher’s methods is also a common issue in traditional educational facilities. Adjustments by young persons with powerful minds must be better accounted for if these people are to reach their higher learning skills development.
Many small or medium sized international schools do not even have a guidance counselor, or a competent director working for the students rather than for the organization as a staff centered and fiduciary leadership role (selling enrollment on a solid ideology and theoretical happenings rather than actual results and truth of what is happening). Quite simply many parents find their student is just going with the flow and is hoping to get through the process. There are many traditional and nontraditional paths for high end learners to consider. Afterall there are nine types of intelligence according to Howard Gardner. Learning styles and teachers practice competence (proximity to great educators or merely ones that repeat the words and keep the flow going without care for any real depth of the education taking place) significantly matter and influence the results, but are often just assumed to be universal to the former when the latter is more evidenced.
